Baptism is for those who have personally accepted Jesus as their Savior. At The Compass Church we baptize children, young people and adults who acknowledge their faith in Christ and can share their testimony with us. Believers are baptized because Jesus was and He asked us to follow His example in all things.
"When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too" (Luke 3:21).
Romans 6:4 tells us, "We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life." We believe baptism is for believers following their personal decision to receive Jesus as personal Savior. "Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day" (Acts 2:41).
While water baptism does not bring salvation into a person's life, it is a powerful illustration of what takes place in a person's life as they accept Christ as their Savior. Baptism is a personal decision one makes upon receiving Christ as their Savior.
In the New Testament the word baptism primarily refers to being immersed completely under water. Being immersed under water is a symbol in the Bible of being dead in our sins- picturing Jesus being placed in the tomb after being sacrificed for our sins. Being brought back up from the water is a symbol of believers being made new in Christ - just as Christ was raised from the dead.
Our baptism experience often occurs in our worship services and feels like a celebration! In addition to the water immersion, we love to share stories of how Christ has been at work in your life and how He brought you to this baptism moment.
While we recognize that some may have been baptized as an infant or by a decision of a parent or family member, we believe individuals should be baptized again to testify to the personal decision that was made to follow Christ.
We can’t wait to give you a t-shirt to wear on the day of your baptism! You will want to wear darker clothing that will not become see-through when wet, some even choose to wear a swimsuit under your clothing. We will show you to a place to change before and after the baptism. Feel free to bring along any other items necessary such as a towel, flip flops, hair brush, etc.

How do you know when your child/student is old enough to get baptized? This question gets confusing since some church traditions baptize infants. Our church does not baptize infants but dedicates them as modeled in Scripture (1 Samuel 1:21-28; Luke 2:21-24).

Our church practices believer baptism and is reserved for those who understand and have responded to Jesus’ death and resurrection. If your child/student has put their faith in Jesus, they may be ready for baptism.
We believe it is also important that children are old enough to understand the rich symbolism of baptism. Abstract thinking in children does not typically develop for most until upper-elementary age. For that reason, our suggestion is many children should wait until they are 4th Grade or older before being baptized. We know there are exceptions to this, and we would be happy to meet with you to determine if your child is ready.
Below are some indicators that your child is ready for baptism. 1. Your child has genuinely received Jesus as the forgiver of their sins and leader of their life. 2. Your child is the one who initiated the desire to be baptized. 3. Your child is old enough to remember and appreciate the ceremony when they are an adult. 4. Your child is old enough to understand the symbolism of baptism.
